Paint the Park Purple | Greenville, SC Relay for Life 2016

Last week Kevin and I had the honor of volunteering to capture the Greenville, SC Relay for Life at Conestee Park. This years theme was “Paint the Park Purple” and let me tell you the event committee putting this together did an amazing job for this amazing cause. I can’t begin to say enough about the time and effort the event committee, volunteers and sponsors put towards making this a truly special evening.

The evening started off with a dinner dedicated to the survivors. Filled with purple balloons, paint cans and best of all survivors! And make sure you check out the cake made by the team from Culinard (The Culinary Institute of Virginia College), so much fun! Such a great celebration of life and hope and absolutely loved the presentation of gifts to the oldest and youngest female and male survivors.

Following the Relay for Life Survivor dinner the park was filled with all the incredible teams fundraising the fight against cancer, supporting the fighters, admiring the survivors, and honoring the taken. Ceremonies were held thanking sponsors, honoring caregivers and presenting generous donations while the survivors and caregivers each walked a lap around the track lined with paper lanterns decorated by family and friends of those who battled cancer. Fundraising continued throughout the evening with appearances by the Clemson Tiger mascot and Reedy Rip It. But my favorite moment and most touching experience during this event was the glow stick and luminary ceremony. Dedicated to those who have lost loved ones. Lights were turned off and the paper lanterns were lit surrounding the track while a moment of silence was held and families and friends walked the track holding the glow sticks honoring their loved ones. The feeling of experiencing this is unreal and I don’t think you can truly understand the emotion that comes from being a part of this unless you have the chance to experience it yourself.

For Kevin and I this was our first time attending a Relay for Life event and I hope the begining of becoming a part of it from here on out. Unfortunately cancer is real and I don’t think there is one person who has not been affected by cancer in some way, I know Kevin and I have. So please, continue to support events like this one and spread hope in this fight against cancer.
